Soil Physics

Soil Physics undertakes research and consultancy projects in a broad range of subjects for a number of sports. Work concentrates on the effect of construction and management practices on drainage, performance and playing quality.

Sports Surface Science

Sports Surface Science is involved in the research and development of novel products which improve the growth, durability and appearance of sport and amenity turf. Research and development into innovative turf systems include moveable turf crossings for race courses and turf modules for soccer and rugby pitches.

As well as its ongoing research projects, the department is able to provide a consultancy service evaluating new products for sports turf management.

Turfgrass Nutrition/Soil Chemistry

Commercial and grant funded trials are carried out on turf fertilisers and turf stimulants. Their effects on turf quality are assessed for both football turf and close mown fine turf. More fundamental research is also undertaken to investigate turfgrass requirements for nutrients. For further information contact Dr David Lawson or see Current Research.

Dr Stephen Baker is Head of Soils and Sports Surface Science.
