Jonathan is head of the Golf Course Development Service and is an Senior Member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects.
He has built up a significant portfolio of projects throughout the British Isles with emphasis on development and construction projects for established golf courses, as well as providing design and project management for new sites. Traditional principles of design are applied which are under-pinned by sound construction principles to meet the future demands of golf.
Numerous papers and articles have been produced by Jonathan on both agronomic and golf course architectural matters and he has spoken at many conferences and seminars including invitations to New Jersey and Wisconsin.
Prior to specialising in golf course architecture Jonathan worked as a senior Advisory Agronomist for STRI, responsible for advising the Championship and Final Qualifying courses within England on behalf of the R&A Championship Committee.
Before joining STRI in 1984 Jonathan worked for ICI Plant Protection after graduating from Reading University.
Jonathan is married with two young sons and lives in Keighley, West Yorkshire. He is a member of the local Bingley St Ives Golf Club.

Golf Course Development – an extension
Jonathan has been involved with several notable projects including the Royal Ascot Golf Club (Berkshire), The County Golf Club (Hampshire) and Newport (Pembrokeshire) Golf Club. These projects have all included the provision of detailed design, contract documentation - project management - and administration. Course extension works have also been completed under STRI Architectural Services at Headingley Golf Club and Scarborough (South Cliff) Golf Club – both original Alister Mackenzie courses.
Green Re-construction
Total green re-construction and re-design have been completed successfully at several clubs including Bridgnorth, Chilwell Manor, Alwoodley, Bramhall and Wellingborough.
Architectural Master plans
Master plans have been produced for a wide range of golf courses including Willingdon Golf Club (Sussex), Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club (Hampshire), Lymm Golf Club (Cheshire), Clitheroe Golf Club (Lancashire) and Walton Hall Golf Club (Lancashire). The proposals provide an holistic approach to future course development in order to maximise course potential and respond to the increasing demands of the golf market.
Bunker surveys design and supervision during re-construction
Detailed surveys have been commissioned by several clubs. The subsequent reports have focused on positioning (appropriate to modern golfing equipment), establishment of a suitable design template for the golf course (taking cognisance of the original architectural style) and construction/drainage methods to maximise playability and provide consistency. Clients include: Elm Park Golf Club, Dublin, Hull Golf Club, Hawkstone Park Golf Club – Old Course Shropshire, Alnmouth Golf Club - Northumberland, Clontarf Golf Club, Dublin and Hunstanton Golf Club, North Norfolk.
