Stuart joined the STRI in 1980, initially gaining two years practical experience on the Experimental Trials Ground before joining the advisory service in 1982 and covering the regions of the North of England, Midlands, Wales and Scotland.
He became a member of the specialist golf service from its inception in 1986 and in this capacity has advised golf courses in the North of England and Midlands, as well as Ireland up until 1993. Following a policy of regionalisation and promotion to Senior Agronomist in 1994, followed by Head of Turfgrass Agronomy in 1997, he has been concentrating on his long-standing connections with the North of England where there is an increasing demand for the Institute's services.
In 1998 Stuart was appointed as the Official Agronomist to the R & A for England & Wales, since when he has been delighted to be involved with the successful Open championships at Royal Birkdale (1998), Royal Lytham (2001), Royal St George's (2003), the Walker Cup at Ganton, also in 2003 and the Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl(2002) and Royal Birkdale (2005).
In recent years there has been an increasing managerial role encompassing the agronomy team of 3 Area Managers, as well as 10 Agronomists and developing the relationship with The R&A.
Stuart is a keen follower of all sport and whilst participating in soccer, rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis and golf over the years he now confines his pastimes to badminton, gardening and walking the moors.

Championship Agronomist for The Walker Cup – Ganton (2003),The British Mid –Amateur –,Royal Liverpool (2004) and Southport & Ainsdale (2006), The Jacques Leglise Trophy – Royal Porthcawl (2005), The Boys Home Internationals --Woodhall Spa (2005) , The Seniors Open Amateur Championship – Saunton (2006) and a number of other R&A events.
