I joined STRI in July 1993 as a trainee Groundsman and went on to gain Level 3 in Sports Turf Management in 2004.
In January 2007, I was promoted to Head Groundsman for the STRI' s Trial Grounds. In addition to the day-to-day running of the Trials Grounds, I am also responsible for the general care, management and security of the buildings at STRI.
I manage four full-time staff, increasing to five during the summer months. The grounds team currently maintains 60 trials of varying size on our eight-hectare site. The trials look into grass species and cultivars, rootzone materials, fertilisers, pesticides, machinery and irrigation products and artificial sports surfaces. Many of the trials are of a highly confidential nature and require strict record keeping on a daily basis.
During my spare time I am a keen cricketer, playing for my local team. I also like to keep up-to-date with the football and Rugby and the teams that I support, whilst keeping a lookout for the pitch conditions throughout the year.
