Rob Everett B.Tech (Hons) - Head of Sports Facility Construction

Robert joined STRI in 1989 and was appointed Head of the Construction Team in 1996. He been responsible for the development of an innovative apporach to current sportsturf design. His major interest is in the design of natural turf surfaces to maximise their performance potential for sports utilising his knowledge and experience in soil management.

Robert was involved in the design and implementation of land drainage and land restoration for fifteen years with MAFF, local authority and Contractors. During his time at STRI, Robert has worked with a number of high profile sporting venues including Ascot Racecourse and Wembley Stadium.

James Westwood BSc (Hons) - Construction and Drainage Consultant

James graduated from Newcastle University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Science shortly after which he started as an Agronomist at the STRI concentrating mainly on clients within Greater London and the south-east of England.

For the past 15 years he has taken on the role of Construction and Drainage Consultant specialising in the design and construction of sports turf facilities. He has been involved in a wide range of projects including some high profile and prestigious facilities such as Rangers FC, Hampshire Cricket Club and Twickenham.  James is currently acting as Specialist Pitch Consultant as part of the multi-disciplinary Design Teams working on the new Manchester Stadium development and The National Football Centre. He has also wide experience of undertaking feasibility studies for proposed new sports facilities throughout the UK.

James is competent in computer-aided design of sports facilities using AutoCad with associated landscaping and civil engineering packages.

Richard Hayden B.Agr.Sc. (Eng Tech). C.Sc. (Agr). M.Eng

Construction and Drainage Consultant

Richard joined the STRI construction team in 2005 coming from a practical golf course operations and consultancy backround. He has worked on a number of high profile championship Irish golf courses since 1996 which has enabled him to gain a practical appreciation for golf course management on international tournament quality courses.   

Richard has also worked in private consultancy in Ireland with projects including reconstruction, drainage, general agronomy and environmental management systems. Developments have included a unique GPS and GIS soil sampling system, soil electrical conductivity mapping for soil assessment and organic waste management. In 2004 he developed the award winning “Superleader”, a business intelligence solution for golf course operations which enabled him to win Irish Postgraduate Entrepreneur of the Year in 2004.

He has studied National Certificates and Degrees in Agricultural Science at Waterford Institute of Technology and University College Dublin before completing a Master of Engineering based on soils at Institute of Technology Tralee. Richard has also travelled to America on a number of occasions for educational training seminars in golf course management related issues. He is a member of the GCSAA and maintains good relationships with golf course superintendents, university researchers and associations internationally.
