Dr Christian Spring BSc (hons), PhD

Christian joined the STRI in September 2005 as a Soil Scientist in the Division of Soils and Sports Surface Science. The role is to oversee the day to day running of soil physics research projects within the division. In practice this means carrying out the routine administration tasks associated with each project, in addition to collecting, analysing and reporting the results of these projects.

Christian spent nine years at the University of Stirling in Scotland studying for his BSc in Environmental Science and a PhD investigating the effects of earthworms on soil structure in an upland acid grassland. After successfully completing his PhD he continued at Stirling University as a Research Assistant for 18 months. Some of the projects he was involved with ranged from the microchemical analyses of Anthropogenic soils on the Island of St Kilda to characterising soil voids in volcanic soils from Mount Etna using image analysis of 2D thin sections.

Christian’s interests outside soils research includes Rugby Union (although he has long since hung up his boots), Motorbike racing and Military History.
