Jonathan has worked with in excess of 120 clubs on a wide range of development projects during his 20 years with STRI. Recent commissions include completion of the new Royal Ascot Golf Club and master planning for a new development in Ireland. He believes in providing close supervision to all projects from inception to aftercare.
Through his initial expertise as an agronomist with responsibility for advising the Championship Committee to The R & A, he has developed a sound understanding of the requirements of construction and maintenance and is an advocate of creating golf courses which are in sympathy with the natural environment.
An Senior Member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, he has also contributed to numerous publications on various aspects of golf course design and construction.
David has around 20 years working experience in the golf world as a ‘hands-on’ Golf Course Architect and Consultant on golf projects worldwide, covering all types of courses from prestige championship designs to daily-fee, resort and golf academy facilities. He has to date worked on over 100 golf course projects, both new courses and remodelling work. He has established a reputation for developing courses with character and imagination, with a sound technical foundation.
His philosophy on golf course architecture is based on his experience of the form and design of the traditional British courses, but with the influence of other styles from around the world, enabling a flexibility of design for a particular project and situation.
Current and recent projects include prestige international standard courses; The Golconda Golf Club for the Hyderabad Golf Association in India, and The Western Ghats Golf Club, India; a 27-hole championship layout at Flaxby Park Golf & Country Club, UK; a new 18-hole course near Beijing, China, called Prince’s Lake and a city centre academy, Afumati in Bucharest, Romania. Remodelling and upgrading work currently includes around 10 clubs, from the replacement of greens on traditional clubs to full extension and modernisation projects.
