Great crested newts, water vole, all bats, badgers and numerous bird and plant species are all protected by law under the provisions of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended). Several such species are found on golf courses and therefore require special attention in order to protect them and comply with the legislation. STRI’s expert ecologists can undertake surveys of likely habitats for such species following sightings, and give advice on the most appropriate action regarding future management.
Rarely does the presence of such species impart management constraints on a land owner, conversely additional moneys are often available via the Wildlife Enhancement Scheme (WES) provided by English Nature for responsible stewardship of the animals and plants in question.
A range of services covering specific interest areas are available and can be tailored to meet individual golf club requests. These range from:
- protected species surveys
- botanical and vegetation assessment
- species surveys including birds, mammals, invertebrates, flora and fungi
